The most scenic route is the California Zephyr from Chicago to San
Francisco. Don't forget that a rail pass does not include a room (a room
includes meals). Be sure to allow an extra day at each transfer point as the
trains are always late.
I'd recommend Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans.
