My girlfriend and I are planning upon driving from Bellingham WA to
Monterey CA in mid-August. We want to stop in Ashland OR for a night to
see the Shakespeare festival before heading over to the coast. We want
to avoid most of I-5 in California. Our debate at this point is how to
get from Ashland to Eureka.

Which of the following routes would one recommend taking?

-I-5 N to Grant's Pass, 199 SW to Crescent City, 101 S to Eureka

OR

-I-5 S to Redding, then 299 (aka two-"windy"-nine) over to Eureka?

Which is faster? Which would be more scenic in mid-August? Any other
pros or cons to either?
