For distances up to 450 miles or so thats arguable.

When I travel from London to Paris I use the train. The
journey time is around 2.5 hours city centre to centre
with check in just 30 minutes before departure and
departures at least every hour.

By the time you travel from London to the airport, check in,
go through security, catch the flight and get back from CdG
to Paris the train has already arrived :)

Trains that do 185 mph change the situation a little. The
train has managed to grab around 85% of the market share
on the London-Paris run.
