Three dollars a galloon simply isn't all that much. Adjusted for
inflation, that would have been $0.44/gallon back in 1955 when I
started driving. That would have been expensive for the era, but
not expensive enough to keep people from doing a lot of driving.

Back in 1955, gas was typically around $0.28 out on the highways,
or $1.92 in today's dollars. So gas isn't really all that high
yet. Remember, back in 1955 13 miles/gallon ws considered good
mileage.
