This is more than 5-6 hours if you drive the whole way, but you might be
able to inexpensively fly part of the way if timing is an issue.
The best beach I know of, with lots of room, and lots to do with kids, is the
outer banks of North Carolina. We used to take our kids every year when they
were little. But it's a good 5 hours from our home near Washington, DC, so my
guess is it is out of your range.
