Actually, it was the first city in California that wasn't the product
of a mission, and is indeed a city, and strange as it may seem, San
Jose's borders haven't actually changed much in 50+ years - San Jose
just grew to fill them with mostly single-family homes over the years,
making it the "poster child" for urban sprawl (at least until Houston
took off). Basically, the city existed before the subdivisions did.
