Go to Rochester NY home of "Big Yellow", that is Kodak. Photography is
not an "academic" subject; I don't think that you will find a school
offering a PhD in Photography anywhere. If you already have a MFA in
Arts or MA in Journalism that is all you need to teach in most schools
of higher education in the US. Photography is practical employers are
more interested in what you can do or have done then in your academic
degree. If you are interested in Photography from a technical
perspective Rochester Univ is the best as you can learn from the photo
whizzes at Kodak.
If you are more interested in film and high fashion, NYU's School of
Video Arts and Film in NYC or UCLA Calif. Another good Film school is
Univ. South Carolina Media Arts. I have a friend who is a Time-Life
staff photographer. Mary only did two years at Rochester U. and then
dropped out for financial reasons. She gets top dollar from major NYC
based publications for her photos of night life in the East Village and
West Village. So, you see it's technical skill combined with a good eye
and being in the right place at the right time. Over the years she's
also accumulated a killer Rolodex of celeb's numbers. Mary gets lots of
exclusives and knows how to work her contacts. That's stuff you learn
on the streets not in a university.
