Nine out of the fourteen had access to the room only from an interior
hallway. We were amused by the place in Houghton, Michigan which had
obviously originally had outside walkways and entrances which were
enclosed some time later. We figured it had something to do with the
tremendous amount of snow that that area (the Keewenaw Peninsula, which
sticks out into Lake Superior) receives in the winter.

True. All but one did provide at least a very light breakfast as
described elsewhere: coffee, juice, cold cereal, doughnuts, muffins, or
other breakfast pastries. We usually had some stuff to eat with us in
case the motel's offerings were unsatisfactory. Most had an independently
owned restaurant next door or within a short walk. We don't mind having
an escuse to walk a bit after being cooped up in the car all day. :-)

We did have problems with noise in many of these places, either with noisy
neighbors or the heating/cooling equipment. Road noise we don't mind so
much because it tends to be fairly steady.

This may be fine, depending on you wants, but
