As a former resident, I can tell you that, since the cruise ships
started coming in, Duval St is no different than any other t-shirt shop
tourist-town drag.
I can, however, recommend 2 great sandwiches. A grouper sandwich at
the Half Shell Raw bar on Caroline and the cracked conch sandwich at
the next door Turtle Kraals. If you have the time, a half day fishing
trip on Captain Johns Greyhound from Garrison Bight is always a good
mix of locals and tourists and some restaurants will cook your catch
for you (I think Perry's will).
Kelly McGillis, the actress from Top Gun, owns a couple of fairly
decent restaurants there whose names I cannot remember. However there
is one that is a brew pub where they brew their own beers.
If you have a car, take a drive 30 miles up US1 to Big Pine Key and
look for the miniature deer. They are pretty easy to find.
Hope you have a good trip.
