I'd posted long ago a request for info regarding Lake George. Well, I've
just returned and would like to thank everyone for their helpful advice.
We'd spent 3 nights at Lake George followed by 5 nights at Lake Champlain.
I'll share our experiences for anyone interested.
Lake George:
Yes it WAS touristy as someone had suggested. But that in no way ruined our
experience. We were situated just down the road from Prospect Mountain which
was a cool experience. Minnie HaHa, the steamboat which goes throughout the
lake was fine as well though nothing to brag about. Nearby was Fort Henry
Williams and Six Flags' Great Escape which we thought was much better than
the oversized Six Flags in New Jersey.
All and all, it was a worthwhile trip.
Lake Champlain:
This was where the true fun began.
Our Hotel was in Plattsburgh, NY which was quite affordable with good
amenities and close enough to the sights we were to visit.
We'd travelled up Whiteface Mountain twice by car and boy this was truly
spectacular! Be forwarned though when the fella at the parking area tells
you that the hike up to the summit is an easy one. Yeah right!!! There I was
climbing up the steps thinking that would be it...but not by a longshot!
That was maybe only 1/4 of the hike up. From then on there were rocks to be
managed (in my opinion hazardous). At the top you'll find out that the hike
itself is actually 26 stories high and 1/5 of a mile long. But oh what a
joy! We got up there the second time by elevator and the views may very well
leave you dumbfounded and besides yourselves. I really can't wait to visit
once again someday in the future.
Beyond this there was also Ausable Chasm which was a true joy as well as
High Gorge Falls which we'd also visited twice. You'll get to walk along
their bridges and paths to experience first hand the roaring waterfalls to
be seen. Lake Placid we'd visited several times just for the shopping and
for more photography. We'd visited more than this but maybe this post is
getting longwinded.
Anyhow, thanks again everyone for your suggestions. If you're looking for
someplace to visit in upstate NY then these are it!!!
