It may not even be a legal one (at least for driving -- as a place to
sleep, the cops don't care). I seem to recall, from looking into it
awhile back, that few if any RVs, even the really big ones, have
seatbelt-equipped, street-legal seating for more than seven or eight.
Most of their size consists of living quarters.
Vans, on the other hand, come in nine-, twelve-, and fifteen-passenger
configurations, and might prove to be a good bit cheaper to rent than
an RV, though if you really fancy the idea of two weeks a dozen-up in
an RV, the cost savings on motel rooms also figures into the decision.
If you'd rather stay in motel rooms, consider two biggish sedans for
versatility (and ease of parking -- RV spaces can be hard to come by
and/or isolated in the boondocks in the large cities).
As for what to see, two very different great cities and their
surroundings present enough possibilities for two weeks, months, or
years; let us know more about the interests and tastes of the various
members of the party and you'll doubtless get more ideas than you can
use.
Perhaps you might first look into the overall shape of the trip. A
triangular route involving the LA attractions, the San Francisco area,
and Yosemite, with Highways 101 and 1 up the coast as a scenic
hypotenuse, is an intriguing idea. Where you go first probably
doesn't much matter -- SFO and LAX probably both have their share of
affordable flights, nonstops even, from the UK.
