maybe with a V6 Explorer, but my '03 V8 (which I traded in for a more
sensible car), got, on a GOOD day, 12mpg in the city and 18-20 hwy.
You want to see POOR mpg, get a late 90's Dodge Durango. 5.9L V8,
9-11mpg city, 15-18 hwy. Had one of those and got rid of it also.
I have to admit, when gas was cheap, I enjoyed owning an SUV. For the
life of me I don't know why I went for the larger engine and the
towing capacity...I never needed or used either. And FWIW, my penis
is JUST FINE as well as my bank account. However, I just couldn't
justify spending $60 at the pump to drive 2 or 3 days in an SUV with
only one or two people in the vehicle. It just seemed wasteful and
expensive beyond reason.
Sooo..we have three cars now, a Nissan Sentra that our daughter
drives, an ES300 Lexus my wife and I use to commute (24mpg thank you
very much), and an LS430 (both Lexuses are ULEV btw), which we only
use on the weekends for longer trips since it only gets 19-20mpg in
the city (but it's a GREAT car). All three of these cars *together*
only costs us about 25% more in gas costs per month than JUST the SUV
alone did and we have a LOT more flexibility than we did before.
We don't miss the SUV's at ALL.
