My complaint (if you read the original post) is people who are trying to
expand this practice at the low end, by appealing to people's sense of
charity to help out those who make very low wages. In the US, employers
are permitted to pay lower wages to tip receivers, with no floor,
provided the total is at least min wage. In effect, they get to
subtract the tips from the wages, leaving the workers no better off
financially, with far less income security. If leaving tips for hotel
maids (and those who clean your mess might not be the ones who presented
you with a clean room in the first place) becomes standard, their wages
will be lowered and they will be the ones who lose if the convention
gets cancelled and people don't show up.
