They are not modern diesels. Ride behind my duramax chevy Pickup. No soot,
and the smell is less / different than a gas engine. I did not notice any
soot from the Jetta TDI I rented in Italy last October. And it ran very
well, accelerated briskly. Just would not work to tow a 4500# trailer like
my truck does. And my truck when not towing gets 18.3mpg at 80 mph on I-5.
