The car ferry from New London to Long Island has its southern terminal
at Orient Point, not Montauk. It does run year round and is operated by
Cross Sound Ferries which you can probably find through Google. While
Orient Point isn't much more than ten mles from Montauk, it will take
about an hour and a half to get there from Montauk.

You must drive west to East Hampton then north to Sag Harbor to take the
South Ferry to Shelter Island. Once on Shelter Island, drive north to
the, yup, North Ferry that will take you to Greenport. From there you
drive east to Orient Point. The two Shelter Island ferries run at about
ten minute intervals and each covers less than a half mile. They cost
about eight dollars each per car.
