True story from this past winter:

We got about 6" of snow one day.

This happened about three days later. There is no snow removal gear in
Tennessee, so while traffic friction melts the snow off the driving
lanes pretty quickly, it sticks around on the shoulder for awhile.

Coming home from work, about 11:15pm, going 71 in the slow lane in a 70
zone about a mile from my exit.

Car approaching in the fast lane, going about 75. Another car coming up
behind him, going quite a bit faster. (85-90 or more)

75mph motorist catches up to me about the same time 85mph motorist
catches up to him. No lanes left for 85mph guy, he's going to HAVE to
slow down. I'm surprised when he pulls in behind me. Is he going to
try to intimidate me into speeding up? Is he getting off at my exit?

Nope. He passes me on the right (yes, on the **shoulder** at 85mph).

Luckily the sun had apparently melted all the snow off the shoulder at
that point. If he'd pulled that trick a half-mile earlier he'd be
trying to do 85 on a patch of ice -- and I probably wouldn't be here to
type this message.
