I'm sorry, I'm very skeptical that news of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy
would have been committed to paper in that day. I imagine that
Michener found that a group of settlers had come from Pennsylvania and
invented their motives. A little research into the culture of the
Pennsylvania Germans would have made this section of the book more
believable.
