Nothing came of it. If you live in NJ you can go to NY (or call), order
something, and have it shipped to NJ. You (not the store) are then
supposed to remit the sales tax to NJ with your income tax, but there
is no record of anyone ever having done that except on very high-priced
items. Likewise the other way. Although NY has been sending spies to
the parking lots of "big box" stores in NJ to watch for people with NY
registerd cars making large purchases, and noting their license tag
numbers.
