As long as pilots follow protocol and keep the door locked, in spite of how
attached they may be to the cabin crew, threats to pax and crew will not
result in a kamikaze 767 cruise missile again. Yeah, being expendable sucks.
But given that all the pax on all 4 planes died anyway, X lives on plane
versus X * 100 lives on the ground seems like a good tradeoff. And if the
pilots don't follow protocol, and another plane gets seized, there won't be
any hesitation ordering a shootdown if it approaches an urban area. Probably
already laid out in the rules of engagement. I don't think passengers will
ever be following the old rules about not confronting hijackers again. If
you're gonna die anyway, you have nothing to lose by attacking.
Having said all that- I'd be real suprised if the Bad Guys used planes
again, at least anytime soon. It'll be something nobody expected, and that
nobody is taking many protective measures about. Part of what you pay for
living in an open society.
