Rent a 4 wheel drive and make sure they include chains. Most of the time,
if chains are required a 4x4 does not require them installed, but the law
requires you have them in the vehicle. It is winter and these are ski
areas, so there will be snow and ice. If no storm, you are looking at 3
hours to Tahoe City. If storm, you may require a day. Saturday afternoon
will be easy except when you get to the Squaw Valley ski area turn off.
This on the Truckee to Tahoe City road. After 4:30 skiing basically stops
and the people leave the resort. So you will hit the slow traffic over to
Tahoe City.
