In the United States, those kinds of taxes are state taxes and/or city and
county taxes, so the rules vary according to location. Some areas levy
different taxes when the restaurants are headquartered elsewhere from those
for restaurants whose home offices are in that tax jurisdiction. And don't
expect a clerk at McDonald's to explain it to you. I still see McDonald's
clerks ask for identification from people cashing travelers' checks; that's a
lot like asking for ID for people paying with ten or twenty dollar bills. KM
