"Thinking about spending a few days in NYC in mid to late January.
I've never been there in the depths of winter before (I am from
mild-winter Seattle.) What are the likely possibilities weather-wise?
If it snows, does the city shut down (like Seattle does?) Thanks."

It usually only snows 4-5 times per year, and rarely for more than an
inch or two. Maybe every five years or so there is a major blizzard.
The city's workers are very good at handling small amounts of snow, and
if there is an overnight snowfall you will find the streets cleared and
the subways running by the time you get up. On the plus side, the city
will be much less crowded in January than it normally is, and you might
be able to get some good discounts on hotel rooms.
