There is a lot of research showing that the colonists did survive -- mostly
by blending in with the local Indian population. There are have been various
reports through the centuries of blond blue eyed Indians, and even the use
of the correct surnames passed down. DNA testing has helped as well. Of
course, most of this is theory, but very plausible theory.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I've read an awful lot on the subject.
There's a lot on the web if you do a search (if you're interested). I find
it fascinating.

Now back to whatever this argument was about.
