Many good restaurants are closed on Mondays. Also, food deliveries
are not made on Monday so the food in restaurants is left over from
Thursday or Friday. Don't order sea food on a Monday! For everything
else - it has been in the freezer which is not a problem at a run of
the mill place but there is no reason to spend big money and get food
from the freezer. Fridays and Saturdays are the best time to eat at a
top line restaurant. If you are in the midtown area there are many
good restaurants on 9th Ave from about 44th Street to 52nd Street. In
midtown eat after 7:30 when all the other diners leave to make the 8pm
curtain at the Broadway shows.
You don't need a suit but in New York you can't overdress. Even if
everyone else is wearing jeans or a track suit you will not be out of
place with a sweater or a sports jacket. (And you may be treated
better!)
The Port Authority Bus Terminal is at 42 Street and 8th Ave. The
subways from there are not convenient to get you to 46 W 17 Street.
Buy MetroCards in the terminal and go outside to 42 Street. Take an
M42 bus to Fifth Ave (you will love the short ride) and transfer to a
bus going down Fifth (M2, M3, M5). Any of those marked "Limited" will
not stop at 17th Street but will stop at 14th. Your address is
between Fifth & Sixth Avenues. Buses take MetroCards or exact change
- $2 / subways take MetroCards only. If you use a Card on the subway
or bus a transfer is automatically credited to the card. If you pay
cash on a bus you have to ask for a paper transfer.

You asked about pizza in an earlier post. Try the place most
convenient for you from this list:
Lombardi's at 32 Spring Street at Mott St. near the SoHo shopping area
on Broadway.
John's of Bleecker Street, near 7th Ave-Christopher St area in the
West Village.
Totonno's on 2nd Ave at 81 Street - Upper East Side
Patsy's on 1st Ave at 117 Street in East Harlem (my favorite, but not
on Sunday nights) Take a taxi or an M15 bus.
NY pizza is best eaten with no toppings or maybe one or two. Loading
a pizza with lots of garbage will ruin the taste.
By all means use the subways! But get a map and just try to get from
point to point until you figure out the whole layout. If you want to
get some place and are talking to them on the phone ask what train
stops there.
Also, Top of the Rock is a spectacular view as is the Empire State
Bldg. 30 Rock is $2 cheaper and you get to see the Empire State from
there. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry (free) and get a good
view of the Statue of Liberty, which is not worth visiting. Ellis
Island will take all day, or worse, especially on a weekend.
For clothes shopping go to Filene's on 14 Street at Union Square, also
Century 21 across from Ground Zero
