€ I've had 1033 commercial flights in the past 15 years. I've had my bags
€ delayed once and arrived a few hours later. Never had a bag "lost".

I don't have *quite* that many flights, but my experience is similar.
I've had three bags delayed in ~500 flights over the same time period.
I even tempted fate recently when I checked my bag from Taipei to
Shanghai, changing from EVA to Dragon Air in Hong Kong :-).
There are some valid reasons for not wanting to check bags, but
worrying about the airlines losing them isn't one of them.
