Hi Monia:
Yes, NYC is an expensive city, and yes, there is some budget
accommodation to be found and yes, there is quality food available at
reasonable prices, particularly at ethnic restaurants.
I publish a travel website about unconventional travel:
www.travelandtransitions.com and researched budget accommodation in NYC
some time ago and here are 3 articles that may interest you:

I also went on a 5 day getaway to NYC last spring and my husband and I
loved it. We stayed in a lovely B&B in Brooklyn and were downtown by
subway in no time. And it was nice since it was a nice quiet
neighbourhood with big trees, nice homes etc. Definitely worthwhile (I
love B&Bs....).
If you are interested you can access my 7 NYC travel stories from this
link:

I also did an interview with the Big Apple Greeters, NYC's free
greeters service (local NYC residents show you around their city, and
it's free!):

Also check out our First Travel Story contest:
http://www.travelandtransitions.com/contests.htm (top prize: an Amazon
River expedition cruise, 2nd prize: a week-long resort vacation getaway
, 3rd prize: a fabulous 2-night B&B getaway to Toronto).
I am planning to go to NYC City soon again, it's a great city and
there's so much to see and do.
All the best!
- Susanne
