An illustration of this point: the arrivals in Seattle for the last
five days have been at 21:42, 03:46, 22:43, 00:20, 01:36. The
best performance was 1 h 12 min late, the worst was 7 h 16 min late.

For the above five trains, one was 3 h 07 min late at Emeryville,
one was 59 min late, and the others were on time.

I've tried this a few times. Although the seats are very comfortable
for daytime occupancy, I find spending a night in one miserably
unpleasant. I get very little sleep. Some people seem to sleep
quite well sitting up, and it's certainly much cheaper than getting
a room in a sleeping car.

Antrak uses a system of "fare buckets" for sleeping-car space. A
limited number of rooms are offered at lower prices, while other
identical rooms cost more. Obviously the cheaper rooms sell out
first, so it's usually in your interest to make reservations as far
in advance as possible.
