The reviews haven't been great. And it's a three-hour-plus show from
what I have heard. That sounds too long for small children.

The McLaughlin Planetarium has been closed, unfortunately, for ten
years. The Royal Ontario Museum is open, and probably a good place for
kids to visit.

There is talk of getting a replacement planetarium facility for
Toronto, but right now the only planetarium is a very small one at the
Ontario Science Centre.

If the hotel the OP is staying at is in the Jarvis St. area, walk over
to the greenhouses in Allan Gardens, which is between Carlton and
Gerrard, east of Jarvis and west of Sherbourne. It's free, and
fair-sized with tropical wings, dry desert wings, etc. Kids would
probably enjoy spending a bit of time there, and it's not like there is
a major time or expense in going there.

Riverdale Farm is about 1 km east of Allan Gardens, possibly walkable.
All sorts of farm animals; free.

Kids would enjoy the ferry ride to Toronto Islands, even if not much is
open yet.

The Toronto subway system has "railfan" seats that let you look out the
front of the train down the tracks. If you are taking the subway, go to
the first car and see if you can snag that seat. Sounds like something
kids would enjoy--I sure did.

On streetcars, sit at the very back. This is particular fun if the
streetcar is going around curves, as the rear swings out a lot.

Harbourfront has children's programming, typically on weekends. The
entire Harbourfront area is suitable for children for a few hours until
they get tired.
