Disabuse yourself of that silly notion. New York City is one of the
safest large cities in the nation these days. Your visit will be no
fun if you fixate on dangers that don't exist. Just make sure your
valuables are secured in a money belt as you should in any large
city while traveling. It is IN crowds that pickpockets operate and
they are good at spotting tourists. Especially around tourist sites
such as the Empire State Building.
