Midtown? Or do you just mean Manhattan? New York is such a big city
that there is no one center analogous to the "centro storico" in
Italian cities. And our subway system is reasonably reliable for most
purposes.
My short answer would be that there are probably no decent cheap
hotels in New York and that I'd point you to a YMCA, but I don't know
what "cheap" means to you. Could you give us a dollar figure?

That question really doesn't make sense to a New Yorker, but I'll say
this: New York is the safest large city in the United States. If you
know how to travel safely in Italian cities like Rome, Florence
(Firenze), and Naples, you're unlikely to have any trouble in New
York.
