Are you travelling alone or will you share the room with another
person?
I can recommend the West Side YMCA for rooms that are very near the
major attractions of New York City, such as Central Park, Lincoln
Center, Times Square, and shopping. A room with two bunk beds (letti a
castello) is 88 dollars per night (44 dollars per person). If you are
sharing the room with someone, that is within your range. However, if
you are travelling alone, a room with a bed for one person would cost
78 dollars.
These rooms do not have private baths. There is a large shared
bathroom in the hallway. However, they are quite comfortable and have
air conditioning and TV in the room. In the summertime, air
conditioning is a necessity in New York, which is usually hotter than
Italian cities.
The YMCA has two other locations in Manhattan, but the West Side
location is the most centrally located. Here is their web site:

If you want something cheaper, there are some youth hostels. I have
stayed in this one:

It is pretty nice, but it isn't very centrally located.
