What should be of concern to most folks is the possibility that if you get
into an accident, whether you are driving a rental car or you own car, and
it happens to be your fault, and let's say it cause the death of a mother
and her 3 children, the father could bring you to court and ask for millions
of dollars. I'm not sure if the "top-up liability" will cover the lawsuit.
Even if it does, the suit could be for double that, and if awarded by the
court, you could be liable for another $1M. That's why I think everyone
should get so-called "umbrella insurance" which covers everything. Use your
favorite search engine and search for "umbrella insurance". It's one thing
to have to pay to fix for the car rental company's car or the other driver's
car, but what what lawsuit that could arise because of injuries and even
death.
