Advance booking is cheaper than waiting until the last minute for standard
fares. However, as the flights begin to fill--or, more importantly, not
fill--airlines may change fares, resulting in opportunities for bargains.
It is a risk to book later, and you will either get a cheaper or more
expensive flight, but it is hard to guess now which.

orbitz.com is a good place to start researching, as another poster
mentioned. Use the "multi-city" option, and you will likely find cheaper
fares than trying to book 2 separate one-way trips.
