My wife and I are driving from SC to AZ this summer. Our "road car" gets
nearly 40 mpg on the highway. The last time we did a similar trip in 2002
(actually a triangular trip that included Florida) , we spent about $100
on gas for the one-way leg from SC to AZ. This time we'll probably spend
about twice as much, i.e. about $400 for the round trip (no Florida for us
this time). This isn't a trivial amount, but in the context of our other
expenses, it's manageable. It won't break our bank accounts.
