I attended a conference in May 2004 that was held at the Marriott Long
Wharf right on Boston Harbor. A coworker who recently moved from
Boston told me all kinds of horror stories about "The Big Dig" and how
it was right next to the hotel and how I probably wouldn't even be able
to walk to Quincy Market two blocks away. So I was pretty bummed about
the trip. When I got to my hotel, I looked around and didn't see
ANYTHING. No highway, no Big Dig, just a street running next to the
hotel with a little construction going on. As I wandered around the
north end of Boston, I did notice some street construction but nothing
like what I had been warned about. When I returned home, I told my
coworker that I didn't see anything and he couldn't believe it. "YOU
COULDN'T MISS IT! IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR HOTEL!" he said (loudly).
We did a little web searching and found out that the highway did indeed
run right next to the Long Wharf Marriott, only now it was all
underground! I have to say the I like the end results of The Big Dig
;^)
