(1) Don't drive in New York or Boston.
(2) Don't rent the car in New York if you can help it. It's likely to
be cheaper to take a train into Westchester or some other point north
and rent the car there. One thought is, you could take Metro-North to
Poughkeepsie and rent a car there. The train goes along the Hudson
River and the views are splendid.

In terms of routes, the Hudson Valley is beautiful if you're there
during a good time for fall foliage. You could try taking Route 9D,
for example. I think you'll probably have more fun going north to
Vermont and driving around back roads there, but that all depends on
how many leaves are left. But my general comment would be, stick to
back roads as much as possible.
