Because it's near Penn Station.
I'm a New Yorker. I know those stations. The route from my home to
Penn Station is to take the Broadway Line to 34 and 6th, walk above
ground to 7th Av., and then take the 34 St. entrance (west of 7th Av.)
to the station. I cannot walk underground from 34th and 6th to Penn
Station. Period.

Too bad. I know better, and though I really don't care if you choose
to believe you are the foremost expert on the location of Penn
Station, I do not want you to lead visitors astray. You can give them
directions for PATH, since that's the system you know about.

Exactly. Try finding out some time where Amtrak, New Jersey Transit,
and the Long Island Railroad leave from. It's called Penn Station, and
it's not on 6th Av.
>But I do recall the signs indicating such a transfer was possible.
Yes, possible by walking above ground from 6th Av. to 7th Av. There is
also a long underground passageway spanning that long avenue block,
but on every occasion I've been in that station (which is very, very
many occasions, at all hours of the day and night, weekdays and
weekends), it's been closed.
