Re: Boycott Gettysburg Posted on: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 13:30:17 +0000 (UTC)

Boycotting Gettysburg is not something we should do, whether we like
some of the changes to the landscape or even to its policies. Some of
the landscape changes do come as a bit of a shock to those of us who
visit, but I can understand that restoring to an appearance closer to
1863 has its merits. They are currently going to do an area near
Warfield Ridge so you can see the area of Cemetery Ridge from that
location. Right now, the cannons point into woods, but in 1863 pointed
into the Union line which they could see from there. Not that I like
all of what is going on; I'm used to the way it's looked for the past
twenty years or so.

I would agree that we should be trying to halt the development in the
area, i.e. Hunterstown is now going to get two thousand houses and it
will be forever difficult to get the feel of Custer's fight there on
July 2.

Gettysburg is a location that should be seen; by any and all who value
American history.
