As long as he/she wants. The trick is not to come to the attention of the
US authorities - no brushes with the law, no legal disputes, etc. Hundreds
of thousands of Mexicans and other latinos have successfully done this
through the years and more do every day. A canadian or two can do it as
successfully if those folks can.
