You might consider staying in the Marina area of San Francisco.
There are a number of motor hotels and motels near Lombard St.
As you rightly imply, the buses near Lombard and the parallel
Chestnut St are quite good even if you would not be near a BART
station. If you have a 12yr-old grandson, you may be eligible
for a Senior fare (50c, includes a transfer). You should be able
to get a MUNI map at many bookstores. Or try
