Almost any time of day or night, going straight down I-5
through downtown LA is a disaster. Alternatives include going
on to I-210 just after entering the San Fernando Valley, and
going south from 210 to I-605 or CA-57, depending on what part
of Orange County you are going to.
Coming in the other direction, keep your eyes open in
Pasadena to stay on 210 (requires taking an exit) rather than
unintentionally winding up on CA-134.
