You are correct. Hwy 395 is a wopping 15 miles east of Lake Tahoe.
But, of course, that's the part of Lake Tahoe that is in Nevada, so
it's not on your Calif highway map.
And the comment about not being able to cross the Sierras was in
reference to visiting Yosemite Valley. How often do you recommend
that people drive to 88, 50 or 80 to cross the Sierras in order to
drive back down 49 or 99 to reach Yosemite Valley?
If someone travels half way around the world, you would think he is
smart eough to drive 15 miles west to find Lake Tahoe.
