You could take a commuter train to one of the smaller towns around DC, such as
Fredericksburg, VA, or Fredreick, MD. Richmond is also quite different, but is a
fairly large city and a state capital.

But what I would suggets is taking a bus to Annapolis, MD, roughly an hour away.
It's a state capital, yes, but primarily a sailing town with historic aspects.
Very relaxed and interesting. Unfortunately, there's no train that runs in that
direction.
