It's not a day trip but just south of DC is a place called Lorton,
Virginia that has something called the Auto Train. It is the only
thing like it in the US. They put your car on the train and you can
get amything from a reclining seat to a private bedroom. It also has
a dining car. You leave in the afternoon and the next morning you are
in Sanford Florida, driving away. The return trip is pretty much the
same.
It's not cost effective unless you are planning to be in the other
area, depending on your point of origin, for a week or more and you
have trouble driving long distances. However, as an experience for a
vacation it's nice to do at least once, especially if you take
children with you to visit Walt Disney World.
The great thing about it, is you can pack the things you will need for
the week in the vehicle and just carry on what you need for overnight
on the train. |
