Apparently, you have to spend a night in Montreal on that trip:

Mon-Fri Sat,Sun
NY Penn Station 8:15 am 7:45 am
Montreal 6:30 pm 5:50 pm
Mon-Fri Sat daily
Montreal 6:45 am 7:35 am 10:00 am
Ottawa 8:33 am 9:20 am 11:39 am

You *might* catch the 6pm train from Montreal to Ottawa on weekends, but
I wouldn't bet on that. There seem to be no later trains on that line.

That one looks even more complicated. You could do it by changing trains in
Toronto and Buffalo, e.g. (with an overnight stay at Toronto).

Have a look at www.amtrak.com and www.viarail.ca
