When I was a kid, my parents and grandparents loved to take driving
trips each summer. We had three weeks vacation time. Once we drove
from our home in LA across country to New York, then down to Miami, then
home. Another time we drove up to Seattle and through the Canadian
Rockies, then home. Another time we drove to Montreal and back,
stopping for several days to see cousins in Cleveland on the way.

My grandfather loved to drive, and we would occasionally log 700 or 800
miles a day on one of these journeys. My Mom and Dad shared the driving
task as well. I am talking about the mid-sixties, and highways are
faster these days. The point is, I guess, that with six potential
drivers you COULD see a lot of the USA. These trips were very memorable
to me as a kid. I still have the journals I kept as we traveled, and we
really did see a lot!
