Personally, I don't see anything but traffic around Charlotte. Since you seem to
be interested in scenic beauty, here's an alternative: continue down I-81 and
spend the night somewhere just short of Knoxville, Tennessee. When you depart in
the morning, take I-40 east toward Asheville, NC. Crossing the Great Smoky
Mountains in the morning on I-40 is one of the most beautiful experiences we've
ever had. You can see why they're so named.
Biltmore House in Asheville is perhaps the most impressive mansion and grounds
in the US, and well worth a visit. Imagine being able to look out your top floor
windows and own everything that you can see -- and later having that land become
the Pisgah National Forest.
Asheville is a very nice town as well.
And to really compound it, you could head south on highway 23 about 15 miles
west of Asheville, and drive 23 down into Georgia toward Atlanta through
extraordinarily beautiful mountain country with twisty roads that will make you
wish you were driving a sports car.
We've done that I-40 / US 23 route more than once on Christmas morning, headed
into Altanta, and it's magical.
But if you do end up taking I77/I74, and you want to experience the real flavor
of America, as you cross the ridge of mountains near the town of Fancy Gap you
should see signs for a heavily NASCAR-oriented cafe offering an all-you-can-eat
deep-fried quail supper. It's a bit of work, but this is not to be missed. 8;)
