I had no difficulty doing a trip like this.

With the 8 hour time difference I was up by 3 (no choice)
in the morning, had the day's 200 miles or so of driving
under my belt by 9:00, checked into a motel (usually
posible at this time), had the day at the 'sight' and was
back in bed (knackered) for 19:00.

One has to be focused on the fact that this is a day-time
scenic tourist trip and not a night time partying trip.

Of course, spending the first few days in 'frisco isn't going
to help this schedual, 3 in the morning isn't the time to
go to Alcatraz (or where-ever)
