The OP did say that flying was not possible on their budget -- no
surprise, that's 8 return tickets to wherever. Rail may also not be
feasible.

Personally, I'd slit my wrist before I'd undertake a train trip with 6
kids. I did it with 3 and that was stressful enough. At least when
you're driving you can stop and let them run around and blow off steam
every couple of hours.
