If they charged you a $25 cancellation or change fee, you
should not have been charged for the cancelled night, as well.
I'd dispute the charge with your CC issuer and let hotels.com
defend it. I'd also avoid making future reservations with a
pre-payment or 100% cancelleation fee in exchange for a
discounted rate. Hotels.com and priceline.com/hotels are
notorious for this... unless that is, I know that I'm keeping that
reservation come hell, high water or death in the family.

When trying to change dates once, a hotel clerk thought the
cancellation applied to all pending dates, even the new date
I just made, leaving me with no reservations. Ever since, I have
adopted a practice of cancelling the first and later making a new
one with a different name (my wife's or my initials), and get a
different confirmation number (first checking to make sure a
room was still available). =R=
